We design environments and experiences that make it easier to explore new ways of thinking. Our approach blends experience design with practical, human-centred methods:
The radical idea that it’s ok to iterate while doing, and that most experiences don’t work due to being perfectly planned, but due to moving rapidly through prototypes. At the College, this is what allows Professors to tweak classes as the event progresses, for the lessons learned during onboarding to be used already during off-boarding, and for participant ideas and feedback to be implemented live instead of put in a well-meaning box meant for the next event.
The ability to zoom in and out between the smallest of details and the grandest of visions. In our professional lives, we often run into the challenge that changing the tiny is seen as being not worth the bother, and changing the big is seen as being too much bother! At the College, we allow ourselves to geek out over the font choices on backstage maps when there’s time, but we also stop conversations about moving chairs to ask ourselves “What are we actually doing here?”. Flexible Focus is about moving between the helicopter view and getting one’s hands dirty, and that duality informs our design in every way.
The College has been co-created from the very beginning. A lot of the “program” is led by participants, and we as organisers do not try to control everything that goes on; instead we build a container of trust and opportunity that lets people unleash their own creativity without fear. This is why Day 4 is an ”empty” day, why evenings are full of discovery and wonder, and why we often answer questions with “We don’t know what will happen – and we do not need to know!”
